Managing Cardiac Disease with HBOT
Houston Wellness Clinic uses HBOT to treat a variety of conditions caused by Cardiac Disease.
- Acute Myocardial Infarction:
Rapid identification of this entity is mandatory so that early installation of re-perfusion techniques occurs (thrombolytic agents, angioplasty and medications). Lidocaine is used for ventricular tacharrhythmias. Other drugs include calcium-channel blockers, beta blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme.HBOT has a positive role to play as arterial desaturation and hypoxemia following acute myocardial infarction are well documented, and are worse than heart failure. HBOT helps restore the focal hypoxia in the heart. Reperfusion of these areas with higher oxygen concentrations is helpful in reducing the penumbral damage, reducing the incidence of dangerous arrhythmias, and increasing cardiac output with concomitant decrease in lactate to pyruvate ratios.
- Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease:
Together with other rehabilitation methods, HBOT results in a marked reduction in the level of arrhythmias, the severity of angina, a decrease in fibrinogen and fibrinogen degradation products. Most importantly there is improvement in myocardial contractility in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.
- Cardiac Arrhythmias:
HBOT may, as a physiological response, cause mild sinus bradycardia; however, it is not a cause of cardiac arrhythmia. In approximately 85% of heart attack patients, either a disorder of cardiac arrhythmia or conduction defect occurs. Giving HBOT for 10-12 continuous managements twice daily, eliminates these abnormalities in over 80% of cases. The production of heart shock proteins, which have a protective effect on the heart following a heart attack, are increased when HBOT is administered. The level of cardiogenic shock is also reduced with HBOT. In fact, there are now reports that have demonstrated that HBOT may be equal to, or better than, antra-aortic counter-pulsation techniques in regard to this phenomenon.
- Adjunct to Cardiac Surgery:
HBOT is both useful in cardiac surgery and in peripheral vascular disease surgery. The HBOT serves multiple functions:
- Reducing post-operative edema
- Reducing post-operative infection
- Reducing recovery times, and shortening rehabilitation period
Most importantly, HBOT decreases the post-operative likelihood of cerebral under-perfusion and cognitive decline, especially in older patients.
