Patients with this condition have profound language and social disabilities. Autism is a complex gastrointestinal, immunological, endocrinological, and neurological disorder arising from genetic and environmental exposures. The environmental issues are serious nutritional deficiencies, exposure to toxic materials and atypical exposure to common childhood diseases. The genetic component is multi-factorial with no single gene responsible. Childhood vaccines may expose children to:
- Unacceptable levels of mercury and aluminum
- Toxic substances such as formaldehyde, endotoxins and adjuvant materials
- Altered strains of viruses
Autistic children often have a leaky gut, giving rise to a host of digestive problems. These defective digestive changes cause nutritional deficiencies which result in neurological compromise, abnormal liver detoxification, immune-function abnormalities, and endocrine imbalances.

There are many factors that need to be addressed when compiling a specific management regimen for this complicated condition. Restoration of the immune system includes cleansing enemas. All potential allergy-causing foods should be eliminated from the diet; blood tests may help to identify the offending foods. A mannose/lactulose challenge for leaky gut should be undertaken. A chelation challenge to exclude heavy metals such as mercury and lead may also be advised.
A common finding is neurological peptides arising from gluten and casein that have been ingested. These are incompletely broken down forming morphine-like substances. Incompletely digested soy proteins may produce phytic acid compounds. To start with, putting autistic patients on a gluten/casein-free diet for a period of at least 6-12 months is used as both a management as well as providing diagnostic information. High quality digestive aids are recommended with this new diet. Also advisable is to rotate foods on a 4-5 day basis to decrease the chance of food allergies developing. A diet that is neither too alkaline nor too acidic should be administered. Proper hydration of the patient is very important; however, plastic containers should be avoided due to potential leaching of phenols. The water should also be free of chlorine, chemicals, heavy metals and pesticides. Mineral water rather than distilled water is preferred. When it comes to supplementation, multi-vitamin and multi-mineral support is essential; a specified combination is recommended that includes natural supplements such as fatty acids, antioxidants and sulfates, to name a few.
Management should be started slowly with initial low doses. Oral rather than intravenous chelation with glutathione and selenium should be undertaken.
Further issues that need to be considered are:
- Gastro-esophageal reflux
- Sleep disturbances
- DHEA and growth hormone
- Vitamin C and DMG (dimethylglycine) and glutamine
- Oxytocin**latest research has shown significant absence of this hormone in Autism and an immediate response to its administration in autistic children
- Craniosacral therapy due to dysfunctional mal-alignment at the craniovertebral junction, resulting in an assortment of neurological dysfunction
- Hearing issues (these need to be addressed as autistic children may have hyperacuity)
NOTE: There may also be a connection with the measles/rubella/mumps vaccine, and the DPT vaccine.
