Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over 55 years of age, affecting more than 10 million Americans. The condition occurs equally in men and women, and less commonly in African Americans. This conditions affects more people with glaucoma and cataracts combined. The Houston Wellness has a unique approach to the condition that includes a combination of the following:
Nutritional supplementation that is intended to slow down deterioration (this includes Ginkgo Biloba, grape seed extract, and bilberry extract)
Increase intake of Vitamin E, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin B6, and Folic acid Hydergine and other anti-oxidants such as alpha-lipoic acid and Glutathione
Patients are encouraged to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, abstain from smoking, and protect the eyes from excessive light, particularly UV light
Daily application of Vitamin A-based Viva drops may provide some anti-oxidant protection to the lens from sunlight and smoke. Additionally, UV-blocking sunglasses should be worn.
In the case of Wet Macular degeneration, the phyto-chemicals Lutein and Zeaxanthin are given, as well as Soy, which has strong anti-angiogenesis properties.
Topical applications are available and should be included in the management. These include Glutathione, L-Carnosine and N-Acetyl Carnosine, Vitamin C in Aqueous solution with Cysteine, and Riboflavin monophosphate.
There are two pharmaceutical drugs that have been found to be effective in the management of this condition: Visudyne and Thalidomide.
